Moreland Insurance staff bring Cadzow Street to the boil with World's Biggest Coffee Morning

Hamilton went green at the weekend as the staff of Moreland Insurance, one of Scotland's largest and most successful insurance brokers, pulled out all the stops to raise more than £1000 for the World's Biggest Coffee Morning.

The kettle went on, the cakes came out and the distinctive green and white balloons were blown up as the 12 staff in Moreland's Cadzow Street office opened its doors to the town as part of Macmillan Cancer Support's biggest fund raising event.

Last year Macmillan signed up 43,000 people and organisations across the UK to hold a charity coffee morning, raising more than £8 million, and the Moreland staff were determined this year to help them beat the record.

Alan Johnston, director, said: "The staff deserve a huge pat on the back for their fabulous effort on Friday morning. It took a lot of organising and we were up against stiff competition.

"Marks and Spencer, which is an official Macmillan partner, was holding a Coffee Morning at the same time, as was the council, which is the biggest employer in the area. So to raise nearly £1000 is a real tribute to the hard work they all put in."

The Moreland staff issued invitations to other businesses in the area and were delighted that nearly a dozen turned out and made donations. The office was also open to the public, who came in for coffee over the course of the morning and gave generously.

In a fun-filled day of prize draws and competitions, the star attraction was a green Mini which the staff borrowed from and Indian restaurant up the road and filled with green and white Macmillan balloons for a unique  and unusual guess the number competition.

They also had competitions based on the scores in the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand and a lucky Hamilton resident walked away with a magnum of Moet and Chandon champagne.

Alan said: "The staff raised £650, which is made up to £750 through Gift Aid and the firm has topped it up to more than £1000. The staff and the generous people of Hamilton can all feel really proud of themselves."
